When I was a small girl, I liked watching Cantonese operas. Whenever there was a show in town, I would pester Pa to take me to see it. I loved the dazzling costumes and makeup and at home I would stage my own little operas. I borrowed Mum's makeup and costume jewellery and for my cast, I recruited my amah for the role of the villain while I played the dashing heroine! I don't know how many times I "killed" my amah but she seemed to enjoy being "poisoned" and "strangled"!
