Pre-Christmas Tea

Whilst out shopping this afternoon, I got some hunger pangs and decided to head for the food court.  I didn't want anything too heavy, so in the end decided on a bowl of soya bean milk and "yew char kway" (fried dough strips) seen here in the red bowl, already cut up.  Then my eye fell on a lovely picture of waffles with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top and slices of banana - well, why not?  Yummy!  I've got to shop here more often, so much choice of food available!

By the way, there's an interesting story behind these dough strips which were created to symbolise the betrayal of a Chinese court official and his wife against their General during the Song Dynasty, resulting in the execution of the innocent general.  A pastry maker was inspired by this unfortunate event to make the dough effigies of the wicked couple by "drowning" them in boiling oil.  Traditionally, the pastry consists of two strips joined together, one strip represents the husband and the other, the wife.
