On the first day of Chinese New Year, we kids would dutifully wish Pa and Mum "Keong Hee Huat Chai" (Happy & Prosperous New Year). Mum would then give us each an "ang pow" accompanied by "good" words like "Good Luck", "Long Life", "Kwai Kwai" (Be good) and "Gau Tua Han" (Grow up fast). Our favourite was "Gau Tu Han" because we couldn't wait to grow up so that we could enjoy what the adults were privileged to enjoy! Now that we have grown up, we know that life is not a fairy tale but an adventure of sorts - we have climbed mountains, sailed the seas, walked the valleys - and the important thing is to keep moving and be happy, no matter what. "Gau Tua Han" everyone!!
