Continuing the story of Ah Hoe .... I used to tease her a lot and called her "The Iron Lady" because of her skill in handling our ancient iron. Everyday she would patiently burn some charcoal and put it into the iron and off she would go, making crumpled clothes as smooth as silk. After she finished, she would throw the remaining charcoal in the backyard where we had chikoo fruit trees and thanks to her, we enjoyed sweet luscious chikoos straight off the trees! She was a wonderful lady and never raised any tantrums despite her tough chores. She left our service after more than ten years with us. When Pa passed away, I was very touched when she took a bus all the way from town where she shared rooms with other amahs to attend the funeral. Thanks again, Ah Hoe! I shall never forget you.
P.S. That's a picture of Ah Hoe's iron. Looks like it weighs a ton, doesn't it?
