I was changing my bed sheet the other day when I suddenly thought of my old amah from China. In those days, they were popularly known as the "black and whites" because of the colour of their attire - white top and black trousers. Mum employed two of them, one for the general housework and the other for looking after us kids. In those days, washing machines were scarce or rather an item of luxury and the poor amah (Ah Hoe) had to hand wash every item of clothing including bed sheets. Mum was quite particular about cleanliness and we changed sheets every now and then. Thinking back, I can't help but feel sorry for that old lady. She had of course gone back to China years ago to rest her bones in her native soil. If it's not too late, thanks so much, Ah Hoe!
