While on the subject of amahs. This one was employed by Grandpa to do the housekeeping at his country house. Ah Kam (her name) was a dragon and she made the other amahs look like timid little rabbits. Everyone was afraid of her especially we kids. Worst of all, she hated dogs. At that time, Grandpa kept two dogs there and she would scold and beat them whenever she could. I can't remember anyone having such a hatred for animals such as she. She reluctantly fed them and if they came too close to her, she would chase them away with a broom. So when she decided to retire and return to China, it was a great relief for not only the dogs but for us as well. Mum said hopefully Ah Kam would not be born as a dog in her next life, if so she would certainly have to bear the consequences of her actions in this life.
