"Do one thing every day that scares you."

~ Eleanor Roosevelt ~

I'm not sure why we should scare ourselves once everyday but taking that literally, here are a few suggestions to give you some palpitations:

Go see a dentist

Sit in a crowded room without a mask on

Eat a plate of live earthworms

Look in the mirror first thing in the morning

Imagine a spider crawling up your arm

Listen to your heartbeat

Ride a roller coaster

If all that is not scary enough, visit a haunted house or try bangee jumping!

Good luck!

Nature at Its Best

I went for a walk in the botanical gardens this morning.  So good to see so much green especially during this current dry spell.  I sat on a bench to soak in the sunshine and fresh air and felt so blessed that I can enjoy nature at its best.  Must do this again soon ....

Good News!

Good news!  My new denture has finally arrived and this morning I went for a fitting.  It looked good and fitted nicely, so now I can smile broadly when I take off my mask!  However, it will take a bit of time to get used to a "foreign body" in my mouth and I must remember not to bite on hard things like nuts and follow all the do's and don'ts to keep it in good condition.  Oh dear, now I have to get up earlier if I have a morning appointment and make sure I put it on properly.  I shudder to think how embarrassing it would be if it were to fall out while I'm talking!  Yikes!

Lunch Today

It's vegetarian Sar Hor Fan (fried flat noodles) with all the trimmings.  On Sundays I like to take a break from rice, so this is a good alternative.  Incidentally, I have bought some new place mats with motivational slogans.  This one gently reminds me to "Enjoy Life" while I eat!

Happy Earth Day!

Go green, nurture nature and make this earth a beautiful place to live in!

Beware, Thunderstorm!

I shall never cease to marvel at the wonders of modern technology.  I was looking up a weather report on my mobile phone when suddenly it came "alive" with flashes of lightning and falling rain and the words "Thunderstorm in the afternoon" appeared.  The only thing missing was sound effects.  Wow, I only wished my Mum could have seen that, she would have been so thrilled!

Rain

The rains finally came last night and this morning when I looked out of my window, I was relieved to see everything everywhere WET after the prolonged dry spell.   Water issues aside, the best thing about a wet day is that I can sleep late knowing I have to postpone my plans and there is no need to rush.  I also like the smell of the earth after a shower and the sparkling rain drops on the leaves of the plants.  Nature does give us lovely gifts if only we can open our eyes and see them.

"Rain is not only drops of water.

It's the love of the sky for the earth.

They never meet each other

but send love this way."

The Importance of Family

God gave each of us a special family that we can call our own.

A family that loves us for who we are
so we would never feel alone.

They may not like everything we do
or everything we say,
but the beautiful thing about "family"
is that they love us anyway.

Sometimes we feel rejected
by people who do not care,
but our hearts are warmed when remembering
that our family is always there!

So hug them a little more often,
for sometimes we hurt the ones we love.
And tell them how much you love them,
for they were sent to you from above.

Yummy Dessert

How's this for a yummy dessert?  It's a pandan layer cake which I bought from a nearby bakery.  They hadn't done this for some time but due to popular request, they have brought it back!  It's soft and fluffy and not too sweet.  Just nice for a hot, hot day when you've run out of thirst quenchers!

Sharp as a Razor

I have never been wrong about how sharp and alert my 90-year old aunt is, despite her age.  She told me of this incident which confirms my belief.  She is an avid gardener and has pots of lovely flowers and plants in front of her house.  One day a stranger drove up to her house and asked if he could buy two of her plants.  A less alert person would have been flattered and opened the gate of her house to let him in, but my aunt was smart.  She told him that her plants are not for sale and went into her house.  I don't know whether the stranger had a genuine interest in her plants or not, you can't tell these days when people's faces are half shielded by a mask; if she had let him in, who knows he might have robbed her there and then in broad daylight!  Good for you, Aunty, I must learn to be as smart and alert as you are!

Grandma Blues

I recently ran into a friend whom I had not seen for some time and over a cup of coffee, she complained bitterly to me that she will never be able to realise her dream of having grandchildren.  I asked her why not and she said that of her two children, the eldest, a boy, is not keen to settle down but is planning to hitchhike around the world.  The second, a girl, is already married but doesn't want children.  Regrettably, young people nowadays cannot be told what they should or should not do, so I said why not take it in a positive way instead of getting upset.  For instance, she would be free of sleepless nights helping to babysit her grandchild or having to wash dirty diapers, feeding bottles, etc.  She was not very convinced by what I said and remarked that a single person like me would not "understand".  I did not have any more words of wisdom, so we parted ways.  I hope her children will change their minds in due course and make her happy.

Going Undercover

The other day, I was standing in front of a mirror putting on my mask to go out when a thought occurred to me.  Many people complain about the inconvenience of having to wear a mask but do you know it can be a beauty aid?  Whether it's 3-ply or 4-ply or 5-ply, it gives excellent coverage for one's face particularly if one has sagging jowls, nasolabial folds, acne scars, wrinkles, laugh lines, not to mention missing front teeth!  My two front teeth have been missing for the past few months pending completion of my denture and going "undercover" has saved me from some embarrassing moments!  Now I feel a little lost without my mask, so every time I put it on, I say "Thank you" to it for not only protecting me from Covid19 but also providing a handy cover-up for my face! 😂😂

Happy Easter Sunday

This morning, Easter Sunday, I drove past our little church in the village and was not surprised to see the church car park full to the brim.  I could hear voices raised in song and for a moment I thought how nice it would be to be part of the congregation.  What better time than Easter for families to get together and spend a few hours reflecting on the life of Christ.  Happy Easter everyone!

Save the Dogs!

I was appalled to read in the news the other day that someone had been going round poisoning stray dogs.  Something like 30 dogs had been found dead so far.  Some concerned citizens have reported to the Police and the local authorities but so far the culprit has not been caught yet.  I can't imagine what could possess  anyone to brutally kill these innocent street dogs.  I guess this must be the work of animal haters even though the dogs had done nothing to them.  I hope something will be done soon to save these dogs.

Butter Fingers

I was just thinking the other day of the many nicknames we have in our family.  When I was small, Mum used to call me "Butter Fingers" because I kept dropping things and breaking them.  Fortunately my siblings are not endowed with such slippery fingers, theirs are tough and super resistant to heat and cold, and I suspect even magnetic because I seldom see them dropping things.  So when it came to special occasions and Mum wanted to use her antique crockery, I was barred from touching them. I remember Mum once took me to the temple presumably to pray for forgiveness so that I would be free from this terrible affliction but that didn't help. The other day, I just dropped my lunch onto the floor.  Luckily I was using an enamel plate, so nothing was broken but I had a tough time cleaning up the mess.  There have been countless other things I have dropped of course from childhood to adulthood and unfortunately I haven't come across  any known remedy for "Butter Fingers" so far.  I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with my brain or maybe I'm just plain clumsy?

Awesome Bites

I popped in at a bakery this morning which I hadn't been to for some time and was awed by the wide selection of breads, pastries and cakes which they had.  They were all neatly arranged in shelves with names and prices and in one small corner, you can see the bakers doing their stuff rolling out croissants, buns, etc.  If I remember correctly, this bakery had been in business since the early 2000's and still seems to be popular judging by the number of customers I bumped into.  I finally settled for three of my favourites - apple pie, egg tart and chicken pie - and a loaf of wholemeal bread.   Pampering myself again but why not?  As they say, "You only live once" and live it well we must!

Excuse me ....?

I hadn't been to my Tai Chi class for more than two years due to Covid and recently, at the insistence of friends in the group, I turned up at the class the other afternoon.  I was quite happy to see my old friends again and there were a lot of "Welcome back" and "How are you?" and "What have you been doing?".  One lady, however, was looking at me dubiously.  Incidentally, I was wearing a mask (being still cautious) and after a while, she said she couldn't recall who I am.  I took off my mask so that she could see my face and she said, "Oh."  That "Oh" left me a little uncomfortable as it gave me the impression that maybe my face to her had changed to resemble an alien from outer space, then she said, "You've lost weight!"  I laughed, somewhat with relief, and said jokingly I had been starving during the Covid lockdown.  I did have a pleasant afternoon though they no longer do Tai Chi but play Bingo instead.  I guess yelling "Bingo" is more exciting, especially when there's money to be won!
